The Classic Inca Trail is a 4-day, 3-night, ~26-mile (42km) hike through the Andes, passing ancient Inca ruins and cloud forests to reach Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate. The trail is moderate-to-challenging, peaking at nearly 14,000 feet (4,215 m).
Itinerary Highlights (4 Days / 3 Nights)
Day 1: Cusco – KM 82 – Ayapata (Approx. 14 km, 6-7 hours)
Pickup from Cusco, travel to Ollantaytambo/KM 82 [5.15].
Hike through the Urubamba valley, visiting the Patallacta ruins [5.9].
Camp at Ayapata (approx. 3,000m) [5.1, 5.15].
Day 2: Ayapata – Dead Woman’s Pass – Chaquicocha (Approx. 16 km, 8-10 hours)
Hardest Day: Ascend to the highest point, Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215m / 13,829ft) [5.3].
Descend to Pacaymayo for lunch, then cross the second pass (Runkurakay) [5.4].
End at the camp in Chaquicocha [5.4, 5.9].
Day 3: Chaquicocha – Wiñay Wayna (Approx. 10 km, 5-6 hours)
Most Scenic Day: Trek through the «Cloud Forest,» passing Inca tunnels and ruins (Phuyupatamarca) [5.6].
Visit the agricultural center of Intipata [5.9].
Camp at Wiñay Wayna (approx. 2,650m) [5.6].
Day 4: Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu (Approx. 6 km, 2 hours)
Early hike to the Sun Gate (Intipunku) for the first view of Machu Picchu [5.9].
Guided tour of the citadel, followed by a bus to Aguas Calientes and train/bus back to Cusco [5.3, 5.7].
Key Logistics
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging; high altitude requires preparation [5.10].
